Writing with Grandmother Spider
This morning I’m giving a presentation called “Exploring the Feminine” at the AROHO Retreat. My presentation features images of the divine feminine, including Spider Woman, the Native American creator of language who sang the universe into being. Grandmother Spider, a version of Spider Woman who is particular to the Navajos, brought light to the world and taught people how to weave. She is the weaver of new creations.
Stories from Elders
In “Grandmother Spider,” Stories from Elders, Robin Morningstar Dick appeals to Grandmother Spider for guidance and honors her as one who gives stories. Read the text here or listen to Robin Morninstar Dick read (3 minutes, 50 seconds), then write your reflections.
Grandmother Spider Brings the Sun
Here is the sweetest good-morning story ever! If you can take ten minutes out of your busy day to be a kid again, let Navajo actress and author Geri Keams tell you how Grandmother Spider Brings the Sun. She’s a delightful storyteller! (10 minutes)

The Hands of Spider Woman
For inspiration on how to weave Spider Woman’s wisdom into your creative process, read artist Lauren Raine’s beautiful essay “The Hands of Spider Woman” and check out her book Spider Woman’s Hands: Weaving a New Web.
